Where we’ve gone from is
dial-up giving us access to information resources through to social platforms
that give us access to each other and now what we’re seeing is these amazing
AI products that you know can understand all human language have access to so
much knowledge about what we’re doing and where we’re going and how we get
there and what the weather’s like and these huge pools of data being
communicated with us through speech. Frankly this is just what I was living
for as an eight-year-old when I discovered Star Trek and we are living
in my Star Trek future now. Except that the physicists haven’t done their bit in getting us faster than light propulsion’s – come on guys! But we’re talking to
computers and I find it you know where do we think this is going. Instead of treating Alexas like toys and having Siri playing us music or
answering occasional questions. In 20 years time we will be treating these
AI’s as professional colleagues but they’re not just able to do really
interesting things that we think only humans could do like recognize things in
videos or tell us a joke or is whatever the skills are that you’re asking
from Alexa but they will be valuable and helpful colleagues who understand
what it is to operate in a fair society and to make the world better rather than
just doing clever things for us.
