Wikipedia Community Restores Jimmy Wales’ Faith in Humanity

So do you have more or less of faith in humanity
since you launched Wikipedia and found yourself dealing with alternative facts today? Well, I mean in many ways I have a lot more
faith that I did pre-Wikipedia because just to see, you know, how many people have been
willing to come together. Kind, thoughtful people trying to do the right
thing. We’re not perfect of course, but we try. But actually one of the interesting things
is we allow people to edit without even logging in so you can edit as an anonymous IP address
and those edits are lower quality than from our experienced volunteers. But they’re still in that positive. And so what you’ll find is someone who’s never
been on the site before comes in, they make some small change and you review it later
and you’re like, they improved that sentence or they added a reference or they took out
a missing comma or, uh, put it in a missing comma, that sort of thing. And so that’s really wonderful. And you know, one of the things that we see
today with the rise of certain social media platforms like Twitter is probably the most
notorious, is it’s a platform for a lot of really angry people who aren’t necessarily
being helpful and thoughtful and useful. But still, I mean, we’ve always had that. Um, and so it’s… humanity is a mix.
