The Real You – Alan Watts

If you ready to wake up, you gonna wake up and if you’re not ready you’re gonna stay pretending that you’re just a ‘poor little me’. And since you all here and engaged in this sort of inquiry and listening to this sort of lecture, I assume that you’re all on the process of waking up. Or else you’re teasing yourselves with some kind of flirtation with waking up which you’re not serious about. But I assume maybe you are not serious, but sincere that you are ready to wake up. So then, when you’re in the way of waking up, and finding out who you really are, what you do is what the whole universe is doing at the place you call here and now. You are something the whole universe is doing in the same way that a wave is something that the whole ocean is doing. The real you is not a puppet which life pushes around; the real, deep down you is the whole universe. So then, when you die, you’re not going to have to put up with everlasting non-existence, because that’s not an experience. Lot of people are afraid that when they die, they’re gonna be locked up in a dark room forever, and sort of undergo that. But one of the most interesting things in the world – this is a yoga, this is a way of realization try and imagine what it will be like to go to sleep and never wake up. Think about that. Children think about that. It’s one of the great wonders of life. What will it be like to go to sleep and never wake up? And if you think long enough about that, something will happen to you. You will find out, among other things, that it will pose the next question to you. What was it like to wake up after having never gone to sleep? That was when you were born. You see, you can’t have an experience of nothing; nature abhors a vacuum. So after you’re dead, the only thing that can happen is the same experience, or the same sort of experience when you were born. In other words, we all know very well that after people die, other people are born. And they’re all you, only you can only experience one at a time. Everybody is I, you all know you’re you and wheresoever beings exist throughout all galaxies, it doesn’t make any difference. You are all of them. And when they come into being, that’s you coming into being. You know that very well, only you don’t have to remember the past in the same way you don’t have to think about how you work your thyroid gland, or whatever else it is in your organism. You don’t have to know how to shine the sun. You just do it, like you breath. Doesn’t it really astonish you that you are the fantastically complex thing, and that you’re doing all of this and you never had any education in how to do it?

  1. ok, why does everyone describe death as falling asleep and never waking up, I don't know about anybody else but I actually dream which means that I am self conscious in my sleep, a much better way of explaining it is actually to describe it as ceasing to exist, because we've all not existed at some point therefore we should all be able to relate to that feeling you get when you just don't exist.

  2. Who gave this genius an idea to add such shitty music at such loud volumes on this great talk.. I came here to listen to Alan watts not shitty music!

  3. Im 11 and understand this more than what most humans would. I beileve its better to know while young so you wouldn't be terrified of your future and experiencing anxiety.so this is a great concept and us kids and school should learn these instead of doing what most kids do is play , but not me.Thanks for the Knowledge.☺️

  4. This man whoever he may be makes me feel like a god death is death life is life we all got to die so why not die if you want to, no more worries right

  5. I understand that the music is added for impact but if you need the music for that you’re not really listening.
One of the greatest philosophers, enlightened beings of our time needs nothing to capture us other than his voice.
Please lose the music. It only serves as an insult to Alan Watts.

  6. Here’s a thought… imagine what’s like to go to sleep and never wake up and then to image what’s it’s like to wake up after never having been to sleep. Therefore in between there is nothing. Many people believe they will meet with long lost relatives after death. But this can’t happen because there’s nothing in between. You can’t have an experienced nothing. Therefore there is and always will be only you.

  7. Horribly distracting music. Noticing you put similar in other videos. Strong suggestion to put it in background.

  8. I dont know why im scared of death.. It sounds really good, if you look at it from the different perspective, death is the brother of death, and he is inevitable. We should embrace it. But im still scared. Help me:(

  9. you are something the whole universe is doing in the same way that the wave is something that the whole ocean is doing..

    Too deep

  10. Is it ok to never talk to anyone and just meditate twice a day and do yoga and then age and loose strength and find somewhere nice to die like beside a lake, when it gets dark and cold?

  11. Do you remember what it was like before you were born? The same goes for when you die… they call it the “present” time because life is truly a gift! It is a miracle that we are living today! To feel , to love! Live and love to the fullest everyday you have! Cuz In the end it never really mattered! Love is the answer ! Don’t be afraid of dying ! It’s part of the beautiful cycle! But appreciate being alive today more! Everything will be alright no matter what! Why be a shitty sad person ? Be happy and feel good right?

  12. We ultimately don't know what happens after death. If we are the God head, should we choose to cease to exist completely, that would be a possibility. Which, after experiencing everything I have, would be the greatest gift imaginable.

  13. Na… I know a lot of dumbasses who are definitely not me. I'm not saying that I'm not a dumbass. I'm just saying I'm not a wide variety of dumbass.

  14. Perfect! That's one thing I love about this universe, I love being part of it here and now through what we call good and bad has all come to my mind as a spectacular experience!

  15. Unfortunately I feel most of us only scratch the surface of what this means, and how it’s applied in our daily life.

  16. This stuff is great. Changing my life. Or at least giving me the perspective to accept life.
I love it. Just wish these videos didnt have the inspirational music… kinda makes it corny which can push people away. Sort of make them think "what kind of hippie spiritualist crap is this?" And then they turn themselves off from it. I feel like these would be taken more seriously without the music. Just a thought. Not trying to be rude.

  17. If u take a cutting from a plant an place it in another pot to grow, u could send the cutting to your friend who lives in another country an there would be one single plant be flourishing on 2 different sides of the world, if for some reason the conditions for the plant which the cutting was taken from became insufficient an the plant withered into the soil, you may think it has died as you would no longer be able to see it anymore but the one single plant would still be very much alive an well sitting in a pot resting peacefully in the sun on the other side of the world making your friend very happy every time they take care of it look at it

When the time is right an all the conditions are perfect the cutting will produce lots of seeds, these seeds haven’t been added to the plant, they literally are the plant where the cutting was taken from on the other side of the world, your friend will be able to send one of the seeds to u so u can plant it in the same pot where the cutting come from, in the soil that is now well nourished from all the goodness from where the one single plant withered away, so the one single plant is nourishing it’s self an very healthy on both sides of the world

Your friend may plant the rest of the seeds an when they manifest she could decide that she wants all her friends an family to get the same enjoyment an pleasure from this one single plant an send it to all of them, now there could be one plant sitting on her grandmas window seal in Scotland, on her brothers doorstep in London, in a hanging basket in her cousins garden in Australia etc. So how could the plant where the cutting was taken from possibly be dead?

We are the one single flower, we all started from the same single seed as the flower, the whole universe is that single flower, even the hyperphetical one that I just used I am using here because this is a continuation of the one single seed

  18. I still worry about the thought of stopping to exist. I try to imagine the transition every night and its scary. And i know wether I'm scared or not scared about it it's going to happen at some point, and although i have a hard depressing life still i appreciate life more than anything.

  19. Now you have a serious idea of what it means to be a practicing alcoholic.  Just listen to this guy go on and on and on about drivel.  Alcoholics do that you know.

  20. If you guys found this interesting and could relate, please next check out Rupert Spira. He will invite you to the next step. 🙏🏼❤️

  21. Hmm I wounder how many life's I've already experienced or maybe Im still on my first haha this life sucks Im ready to experience a new one now.

  22. This doesn't make any sense. He couples "powerful" music to pretty video scenes and then adds nonsensical jibberish. How much does he get paid for snookering people into thinking he's onto something? I'm sure Dr. Wayne Dyer would be impressed.

  23. There is something that muslims say. Allahu akbar. Which means god is the greatest. When i see this video i think of god. Just think about it. Just think.

  24. I'm not sure if I believe the things Alan Watts talks about. But, maybe it's not something to be "believed," so much as it's a different way of looking at the same thing. Either way, he had the most tremendous ability to communicate new concepts, and to relate to a western audience with a Christian background. Listening to Mr Watts is one of the things which helps me to feel better when I'm down. I have tremendous respect for him, and wish I could have met him.

  25. Inside the doors are sealed to love
    Inside my heart is sleeping
Inside the fingers of my glove
Inside the bones of my right hand
Inside it's colder than the stars
    Inside the dogs are weeping
Inside the circus of the wind
Inside the clocks are filled with sand
    Inside she'll never hurt me
    Inside the winter's creeping
Inside the compass of the night
Inside the folding of the land

    Outside the stars are turning
    Outside the world's still burning

Inside my head's a box of stars I never dared to open
Inside the wounded hide their scars, inside this lonesome sparrow's fall
Inside the songs of our defeat, they sing of treaties broken
Inside this army's in retreat, we hide beneath the thunder's call

    Outside the rain keeps falling
    Outside the drums are calling
    Outside the flood won't wait
Outside they're hammering down the gate

Love is the child of an endless war
Love is an open wound still raw
Love is a shameless banner unfurled
    Love's an explosion,
Love is the fire of the world
    Love is a violent star
    A tide of destruction
    Love is an angry scar
A violation, a mutilation, capitulation, love is annihilation.

Inside the failures of the light, the night is wrapped around me
Inside my eyes deny their sight, you'd never find me in this place
Inside we're hidden from the moonlight, we shift between the shadows
Inside the compass of the night, inside the memory of your face

    Outside the walls are shaking
    Inside the dogs are waking
    Outside the hurricane won't wait
Inside they're howling down the gate

Love is the child of an endless war
Love is an open wound still raw
Love is a shameless banner unfurled
    Love's an explosion,
Love is the fire at the end of the world
    Love is a violent star
    A tide of destruction
    Love is an angry scar
    The pain of instruction
Love is a violation, a mutilation, capitulation,
    Love is annihilation.

I climb this tower inside my head
A spiral stair above my bed
I dream the stairs don't ask me why,
I throw myself into the sky

Love me like a baby, love me like an only child
Love me like an ocean; love me like a mother mild
Love me like a father, love me like a prodigal son
Love me like a sister, love me like the world has just begun
Love me like a prodigy, love me like an idiot boy,
Love me like an innocent, love me like your favorite toy
Love me like a virgin, love me like a courtesan,
Love me like a sinner, love me like a dying man.

    Annihilate me, infiltrate me,
    Incinerate me, accelerate me,
    Mutilate me, inundate me,
    Violate me, implicate me,
    Vindicate me, devastate me

Love me like a parasite, love me like a dying sun
Love me like a criminal, love me like a man on the run

    Radiate me, subjugate me,
    Incubate me, recreate me,
    Demarcate me, educate me,
    Punctuate me, evaluate me,
    Conjugate me, impregnate me,
    Designate me, humiliate me,
    Segregate me, opiate me,
    Calibrate me, replicate me
