How to Sail a Boat : Jibing Techniques: Free Online Sailing Lessons

We’re not sailing with the wind, if I wanted
to turn the boat more to the starboard or to the right, the wind will catch the back
side of the mainsail and throw it across. We call that jibing and its fun. What I’m
going to do though, instead of just letting the wind get the back side of the mainsail
and throw it across, I’m going to start my jibe by pulling my mainsail into the middle
of the boat. So I’m sailing down wind, we’ll pull the mainsail into the middle of the boat,
I’ll alert my crew by saying prepare to jibe, I’ll pull the tiller over a little
bit more and the boat will turn through the wind completing the jibe and then I’ll let
the sail back up. if we want to head back up as close to the wind as we can, I will
start by retrimming my jib and I’ll set it up for my close hauled course, then as
I turn the boat into the wind, I will be pulling in my mainsail. You may notice there’s a
motorboat coming out towards up. when we’re a sailboat and a motorboat has to keep clear
of us, we have an obligation to not steer all over the harbor, so I’m going to go
straight so that motorboat can figure out the best way to avoid having a collision with
us. If I continued my turn, the motorboat might be confused about what my intentions
were and that would make it difficult for him to avoid a collision. We’re approaching
shoreline again, so we’re going to get ready to come about, once again I’m going to look
90 degrees off to the side, find a – there’s a red buoy out there that would be a pretty
good target for us to come out of our tack on. And I will say to my crew prepare to come
about and then I’ll say hard lean and turn the boat towards that red buoy. As we do that
we’re going to switch the jib, always on the low side of the boat.

  1. Videos like this make it seem 2 easy. Bring ur main in hakf way?? Try that in a dingy, gybing sucks. If u wanna sail jump in a laser,

  2. Gee, everybody's a critic! 🙂

He's covering the basics in light wind. Jibing is different in different boats. Jibing doesn't necessarily suck – some boats will jibe quite gently, some boats you have to be more careful in a jibe.

  3. Come on out to San Francisco Bay and sail, big shot. We'll show you how we sail.

And before lecturing us about spelling, you might want to review your elementary school books on capitalization.

  4. Good video! I thought it was very good to see him pause in the middle of his lesson to show how it's important to always have a good look around before executing a manoeuvre in order to avoid potential hazards.
