D2L: Edit the Course Homepage and Create a Custom Widget

This video shows how to make changes to a
course offering homepage and create custom widgets. The course offering homepage is what
everyone sees when they click on the name of course on the My Home page or on the course
selector on the minibar. Changes to the default course homepage can be made by clicking the
icon to “Edit this homepage,” which is located at the bottom of the window. Rename the default
so it can be easily identified when copied to another course offering. The custom homepage
header is a string of characters that can be added to the top of the homepage for this
course offering. The Org Unit name appears already, so this might work for a short welcome
message. The homepage can point to a particular tool within the course, or its layout can
be changed. For the default (widget-based) homepage, widgets
can be rearranged by clicking and dragging. To add a widget, click on the Add Widgets
link for that panel. Select a widget in the Add Widgets dialog and then click the Add
button. To remove a widget, hover the mouse pointer over the widget and click on the link
to remove it. Click on the Save button to save changes or click on Save and Close to
see the page where custom widgets can be created. (This page can also be reached by clicking
the Edit Course link on the navbar and then clicking on the Widgets link.) On the Manage Widgets page, click the Create
Widget button to create a new widget. The name is required and appears in the widget’s
titlebar. The description is only visible to the instructor when looking at a list of
widgets. The Content tab is where the content of the widget is added. When done, click the
Save and Close button to return to the Manage Widgets page. Then click the Homepages link,
click the name of the current active homepage to edit it, and click the Add Widgets button
to add the new widget to a panel on the homepage. You may need to choose CUstom Widget to see
the widgets that you have created. Select the widget and click the Add button. You can
click and drag the widget to move it within a panel. Click Save and then click the Course
Home link on the navbar to confirm that the custom widget is visible. Custom widgets and edited homepages can be
copied from one course offering to another.
