3 Free Third-Party Tools To Use Alongside Your Church’s Website | Pro Church Daily Ep. #082

– Today on Pro Church Daily,
we’re talkin’ about three free third-party tools to use
alongside your church’s website. – Well, hey there, and
welcome to Pro Church Daily. The show, where, in 10 minutes or less, you’ll get your daily
dose of tips and tactics to help your church share
the message of Jesus, while we navigate the
biggest communication shift we’ve seen in the last 500 years. I’m your host, Alex Mills,
I’m joined, as always, by the boss man, it’s Brady Shearer, and, today, we’re talkin’
about three free third-party tools that you should use
alongside your church’s website. – Through the process of building our own church website builder, Nucleus.church, I have found something
that I didn’t actually expect to be the case, going in, and that is that a lot of our churches, a lot of us, really love the idea of an all-in-one tool
that can do everything. – Mm-hmm – And, when it comes to
websites, your website should be able to do pretty much
everything on its own. But, there are a number
of third-party tools that you can use that, in theory, you could do on your
website, but it’s much better to use a third-party
tool that’s actually free than build it into your website. – OK – And, perhaps the best
example of this, the first one, is you really don’t ever
need, want, or should upload video to your church website, – Yeah.
– itself. And, there are applications
that will allow this to be possible, but the
reason that you don’t want to do this is because it takes
incredible infrastructure, especially when we’re talkin’
about large video files, to host those on your
server, to then encode them, to deliver them, the
bandwidth to stream them to all around the world,
when there are free solutions that we can use, otherwise. It used to be, back in
the day, for instance, that a huge selling point
of a website solution, church or otherwise, would be like, “You get unlimited storage,” or, “You get “250 gigs of storage.”
– Yeah (laughing) – That made sense about 10 years ago. But, nowadays, there are so many free third-party solutions. Data storage online, on
the web, on the cloud, has become so much more affordable, and that’s where free solutions, like a YouTube or a Vimeo, have come up, it just doesn’t make sense
to host large video files on your server, when you can
use a free tool like YouTube, – Right. – Take advantage of their
amazing tech infrastructure, captions, speed playback,
varying resolution, along with the attention that
a platform like YouTube has, The second-largest search
engine in the world. – Yeah. – It doesn’t make any
sense to upload your video to your own website, when you
could upload it to YouTube, take advantage of all
the attention they have, like I said, the second-largest attention grabber in the entire world, every single kid under 15 wants
to be a YouTuber, nowadays. Upload it there, it can get a ton of search attention juice from there, you can also take advantage
of their amazing tech, and then you can embed it
directly onto your website. – Yeah – Just because you’re uploading
elsewhere, doesn’t mean that you don’t, then, embed
it onto your own site, because you wanna have that home base, where everything can be found,
that’s the idea of Nucleus, right, the all-in-one central hub, but you can leverage a
third-party tool, like YouTube, that is free, and way more
tech advanced than any solution a church website provider can offer, or any website provider can offer. You know, Squarespace
isn’t letting you upload gigs and gigs, I mean,
maybe they allow it, but it’s a not a best practice that they would suggest,
because YouTube exists. – Yeah. – Use that, as long as you have a backup. You know, make sure that
you have a backup, yourself. Don’t store everything on
YouTube, and if one day YouTube goes down, you lose it, but. – I think, you know, I’m
having these conversations, it feels like, almost on a daily basis, people asking, “Oh, what’s
the best video host?” And, there’s even a poll on
one of our private Facebook groups asking about, “Where
do you guys host your videos? “YouTube, or Vimeo, or wherever?”, and – Wistia. – Yeah, and, I mean Vimeo’s
great, and you kinda get away from some of the ads, and it has a little bit of
a different design look. But, I think the fact
that YouTube is, in fact, the internet’s
second-largest search engine, I feel like that is so important, and often overlooked, that, you know, you’re getting, basically free
search engine optimization from being on that platform,
because people are searching, and we’ve talked about this before, people are asking questions
on YouTube every day. You know?
– Yeah. – And, they’re using it as similar to the way we use Google as, just like a search engine to find
answers to questions. And so, why not host your stuff there? Like you said, it has the
preexisting framework, they’re great at what they do, and you get to, kinda, double
down on the search engine indexing, there, and it can
only benefit your church. – So, that’s free tool
number one, don’t upload your videos to your website,
upload them to YouTube. The second free tool is
something called Cloudflare. And, Cloudflare will give
you a free SSL certificate, which will allow you
to secure your website to allow for sensitive
information to be passed. This is especially pertinent
to transactional data being shared, when someone
gives online, or, you know, pays for a mission trip,
or something like that. They’ll also give you a global CDN, CDN stands for Content
Distribution Network. Basically, what that
means, is that if someone from Singapore is accessing
your website from Massachusetts, they will have your website
stored all around the world to their servers, so that
they won’t have to serve that information on your
website from Massachusetts over to Singapore.
– Right. – They’ll have a server,
maybe in Singapore, maybe in Japan, somewhere way closer. Which means that the
performance of your website increases everywhere,
all across the world, and then they also have
additional security options, when it comes to DDoS, and
making sure that your website is just safe and secure from hackers. This is a free platform,
they have paid solutions, but you can get that free SSL, normally costs about $100 a year, that free CDN, as well as
that free additional security to your website, and this
is an amazing service, because all of these
things usually cost money. You can get SSLs and pay
for them through a GoDaddy, connect it to your website,
– Yeah. – or you can get it for free through a platform like Cloudflare. – This is one of those services online that I don’t
understand how it’s free. You know what I mean, like,
people are setting up– – Investor capital. – Yeah, I guess, like,
people are setting up SSLs for their Nucleus every day, and sometimes they’ll ask, “What do you recommend?” And, I’m like, well, you
can buy one from GoDaddy, or someone else, or you can
get the same service for free– – With a ton of extra other features, as well.
– Yeah. And so, it’s just a no-brainer, and it’s real easy to
set up, like a few clicks of your mouse, and you’re
up and runnin’ in no time. – Final free third-party
tool that you wanna use and integrate with your site is live chat through a platform like Drift. – Yeah. – Drift will allow you to embed and create a live chat button and
bot, directly on your site. If you wanna know how to
do this, best practice is we spent a full episode, episode number 71 of Pro Church Daily, talkin’
about how to actually set it up, and ways to best use it. But, again, there are website
providers that probably offer a live chat feature in
their group of features, but it’s one of those things, where, well, if there’s a free tool
that’s alreay doing this way better, why would we build it, when we could direct our energy elsewhere.
– Yeah. – And, to pull back the curtain a bit, this is, kind of, a little
bit of a line of thinking of how we are building Nucleus, which is, OK, we have a certain
amount of time and energy, and we wanna build the features that will matter most
to our Nucleus users, – Mm-hmm. – but if there’s a way
to enable what they want to do for free, already that exists, we don’t wanna spend our
time and money building that, – Right. – because we wanna build
something like an integration with an Elvanto church management software that has never existed before, that’s gonna help so many people. I don’t wanna spend a ton
of time and money building infrastructure to upload
videos to Nucleus. Yeah, we could do it, of course, but there’s a third-party
solution like YouTube for free that’s gonna do it just
as well, if not better. Let’s spend our time and money elsewhere. And, when it comes to your
own decision making in church, that same line of thinking applies. Rather than spending to
upload your videos to Wistia, let’s say, which I love, upload them to YouTube, because that’s free. We all have limited resources, when it comes to time and money. If we can leverage free third-party tools, yeah, ideally, there’d
be a one, all-in-one tool that could do everything for everyone. But, there’s not, and
so we have to find a way to integrate these things,
make the best usage of our resources, and
still create a platform where everything works nicely together. – Yeah, and if you’re listening
or watching this episode, and you haven’t listened to episode 71, where we talk about live
chat widgets for you website, I recommend you go and do
that, because we talk about some real testimonials from pastors, and people who work at churches. And, the fruit of having
this live chat widget on their website, it’s
been a really incredible, like, new avenue for ministry. And, Drift does a great job of providing it for you for free. So, I’d recommend you listen
to the episode, as well. – That’ll do it for today’s episode of Pro Church Daily,
we’ll see you tomorrow. Hey, thanks for watching today’s episode of Pro Church Daily. If you haven’t already,
subscribe to this channel, and turn on notifications, so
you never miss another one. – And, if you like this
video, it would mean the world to us if you
give it a thumbs up. – Thanks for watching,
we’ll see you tomorrow.

  1. Would love to see a video about “the first video your church needs to invest in” or “Does your church need a promo video?” When are the necessary and what’s priority?
